Jungle-GUide to Social Media
Often, social media can be hard to navigate and certain features can move or be hard to find after updates. We have created slideshows describing how to set up some of the most important features necessary for internet safety for five popular social media apps. Check out more in-depth social media and parent control app descriptions in our Social Media Presentation.
Discord

Discord is an instant messaging and community-centric platform. Originally popular for gaming communities, Discord has now branched out to include groups from all parts of the internet, including book, movie, and music fans. People can send direct messages, voice and video chat, share media and files, and join communities called "servers" that acts as a large, organized group chat (similar to Slack).
Instagram

Instagram is a photo- and video-sharing platform. Kids can post photos to share them with friends through “Posts” or “Stories,” directly message each other, and see images or videos that friends or content creators post in a “feed.” Common topics among teens involve funny pictures (memes), DIY tutorials, or animal videos. Outside of this, it can also be used to create a professional space to display work-related projects and activities.
Snapchat

Snapchat is a messaging app that allows people to send pictures, or “snaps”, to one another. Snaps or text messages can be sent directly or with group chats. Once the snap is opened by the recipient, it disappears. Snapchat also features a “feed” like Instagram, where users can watch their friends’ “stories,” video articles from news outlets, and celebrity gossip.
Tik-Tok

TikTok is a video sharing app used to create, share, and watch short video clips, often with a music or audio overlay. Kids record videos of themselves and add effects, music, filters, and other video edits that can be funny and entertaining. TikTok features a feed where users can watch their friends’ videos, discover others by topic or “hashtag,” and submit videos for “challenges” (ie. mining or acting along to a certain song or video).
YouTube

YouTube is a video-sharing platform used to watch, upload, and share videos. YouTube is the most general platform on this list, as content can range from educational documentaries and how-to tutorials to gaming, comedy, makeup, and music videos. Some kids like to make gaming content for YouTube or the streaming platform Twitch.
